Like salvation, discipleship is a process. We grow in holiness, we grow in our participation in the divine nature (see 2 Peter 1:2-4), we grow in our likeness to Christ. Discipleship is dynamic that begins in the sacraments and the hearing of the kerygma. But, to return to the Apostle Paul one last time, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14, NKJV).

Each of us must discern the providential working out of God’s grace in our own lives. Just as spouses are called to discern God’s providence in each others’ lives parents are to do this for their children. Turning from the family to the Church, priests are responsible for discerning and fostering the vocation of their parishioners and bishops for the members of the diocese. All of this is, necessarily, personal.

The evangelization of America by Orthodox Christians and traditionally Roman Catholics and Evangelical Protestants, requires that we be transfigured by the Gospel. Or to put it another way, the evangelistic work of the Church is only possible if Orthodox Christians are really and truly personal and intentional of Jesus Christ.
